Docking stations: self-empty, mop wash and charging

A dock turns a robot vacuum from a gadget that needs daily attention into an appliance that runs for weeks. It is also the largest cost step and the largest source of field issues in a robot range. This note explains the dock types, what is inside them and what a buyer should specify. Robot lines are on the robot vacuum cleaner page.

A dock is a second product

When a robot ships with a base, the buyer is really sourcing two machines that must work together. The robot has its own motor, battery, sensors and software; the dock has its own power supply, a suction unit, a water system in some versions, and a communication link to the robot. The two are tested together as a system, and a dock that is compatible with only one robot model is a design commitment. The category's market note, robot vacuum market trends, covers why docks have become the main axis of differentiation, and the buyer view in this post focuses on parts and specification.

Dock types

Dock typeWhat it doesMain partsTypical issues
Charging baseCharges the battery and gives the robot a home pointCharger circuit, contacts, guidance beaconContact oxidation, misalignment, charger standard
Self-empty dockCharges, then sucks debris from the robot bin into a dock bag or binSuction fan, dock bag or tub, seal ports, filterPort seal leaks, bag fit, airflow noise
Mop wash dockWashes and sometimes dries the mop pads or rollerClean and dirty water tanks, pump, wash tray, drying fan or heaterOdour, leaks, scale, pump faults
Combination dockSelf-empty plus wash, dry and sometimes auto water refillAll of the above plus valves and sensorsLargest parts count, size and weight

Each step up the table adds an electromechanical system and a consumable. A self-empty dock needs a bag or a tub; a mop wash dock needs cleaning solution or at least clean water, a filter or scraper, and periodic cleaning by the user. Packaging also grows, since a combination dock is bulky and heavy compared with the robot. Dock size and weight directly change the carton, the pallet and the shipping cost per set, which are reviewed in packaging and retail boxes and logistics and shipping.

Self-empty: the airflow side

A self-empty dock evacuates the robot's dust bin into a larger store. A fan in the dock pulls air through a port that mates with the robot's bin outlet. The seal around that port must be good: leaks reduce evacuation and blow dust back out. The dock bag is the same type of laminated non-woven used in canister vacuums, scaled for the dock port, and a bag that does not seat correctly will leak around its collar. The dock bag capacity is typically a few litres, long enough for weeks of use per datasheet, and the dock should tell the user when it is full. The material and bag-fit rules are covered in dust bags vs cyclones, and the bag line is on the dust bag and bin page.

Noise during self-emptying is brief but loud, and there are retail reviews that mention it. Fan choice, port design and housing damping are the levers, and the dock noise should be measured with the same method as the robot, under IEC 60704-2-1 principles, or stated clearly as a short-duration event on the datasheet. The measurement guide is in noise levels guide.

Mop wash and drying

A wash dock has a fresh water tank, a dirty water tank, a pump, a wash tray and typically a scraper. The mop pad or roller is rinsed against the tray, and the dirty water goes to the second tank. Drying is done with warm air, a heater, or simply an air fan; hot-air drying uses more electrical power, so the dock power supply rating and the product label must reflect it. Good drying reduces odour, which is the main complaint about wash docks. Design points for the buyer include:

  • Tank volume and filling method, since small tanks mean frequent attention.
  • Tank seals and valves, which are the usual source of leaks in transit and in use.
  • Water path materials, which must resist scale, cleaning agents and mould growth in use.
  • Drain and cleaning access, so the user can clear the tray and the filter without tools.
  • Pump life and noise, tested over a stated number of cycles.

Charging, safety and radio

All docks provide charging, and many provide the robot's only route to the mains. The charger section is assessed under the relevant electrical safety standard, for example IEC/UL 62368-1 or IEC 60335-2-29 for chargers, with the whole appliance under IEC/EN 60335-1 and 60335-2-2 or UL 1017 where applicable. Docks with wet functions add water-electrical separation requirements, since liquid and mains voltage are in one housing. A robot or dock with Wi-Fi or Bluetooth needs radio compliance: CE RED in Europe, FCC in the United States, as discussed in CE RED and FCC for robot vacuums. The robot battery stays under UN 38.3 and IEC 62133-2 or UL 2054 rules and requires dangerous goods paperwork for air shipping. Document sets are verified per project; the desk holds no certificates itself.

Specification and acceptance

  1. Define which dock type goes with each robot model and whether docks are interchangeable between models.
  2. List all consumables: dock bags, filters, mop pads, cleaning solution and the pack size of each.
  3. Set a leak test for water tanks and ports, including a transport vibration test of a filled and drained dock.
  4. Set a docking success test: number of docking attempts from set positions, and the allowed failure rate, agreed with the plant.
  5. Check self-empty evacuation with a stated debris load, and tank cleanliness after a stated number of wash cycles.
  6. Confirm packaging drop test results for the dock, the heaviest and most fragile unit in the carton.

Dock parts are also spares: bags, filters, mop pads, water tank assemblies. Plan the spare line before launch. A dock program has longer development and certification time than a robot-only program; reference timings are on MOQ and lead time and are confirmed in writing for each program. Send the robot model, target dock type and market through the quote form, and the desk will shortlist partner plants. The full range of vacuum parts is in vacuum components.

Questions buyers ask

What is a self-empty dock?

It is a base that charges the robot and, after a run, pulls debris from the robot bin into a larger dock bag or tub. It reduces how often the user empties the robot, at the cost of a consumable bag and extra noise during emptying.

What goes wrong most often with mop wash docks?

Water leaks, odour from standing water and pump faults are the common issues. Drying design, tank seals and easy-clean access are the main prevention points, and a transport leak test should be part of acceptance.

Does a dock need separate certification?

A dock with a charger, a mains connection and any radio module is assessed for electrical safety and radio rules. The robot battery keeps its own UN 38.3 and IEC 62133-2 or UL 2054 documents. Reports are verified per project.

Can one dock fit several robot models?

Only if the contacts, ports and communication protocol are designed to match. Interchangeability should be defined in the specification and tested with each pairing.

Send the lines you need, target specs, the quantity per model and your market. The desk replies in writing with matched plants, a bill-of-materials sheet, certification routes and the reference MOQ.
