Why clusters decide sourcing outcomes
A vacuum cleaner is an assembly of a motor, a fan, a battery or cord, injection-moulded housings, filters, brushes, a controller board and a retail box. In a cluster all of these suppliers sit within a short drive of the assembly plant. Mould repairs take days instead of weeks, a failed batch of brush rolls is replaced from a neighbour, and a design change does not wait on a long shipment. For a buyer, the practical effects are a shorter sampling loop, easier audits and more choice of plant at a given specification.
Clusters also differ in what they are good at. A plant that builds a mid-range corded canister at scale is rarely the right partner for a robot with a laser turret, and vice versa. The sections below describe each cluster in qualitative terms, with figures attributed to the publishers that reported them. These are third-party reports, not measurements by Vaculent, and they are cited as reported.
Suzhou, Jiangsu: floor care, robots and precision parts
Local press in Jiangsu describes Suzhou as a major base for floor-care appliances and reports that around 70% of the world's products in this segment are made there, with the Wuzhong district's Linhu town as a concentration point. The same coverage describes a chain of complete machine assemblers, motor makers and precision component suppliers, and places the robot vacuum, floor-scrubber and cordless stick segments at the centre of it. Securities Times reported that Jiangsu's 2024 exports of vacuum cleaners were RMB 15.93 billion, up 9%, within household appliance exports of RMB 68.16 billion, up 19%.
For a buyer, Suzhou is the first place to look for robots, floor washers and cordless sticks where motor, battery management and mechanical precision matter.
Cixi, Ningbo: the small appliance centre
Cixi in Zhejiang is known in the press as the small appliance capital. Reports from the Ningbo commerce authorities and national media describe more than 2,000 complete-machine companies and nearly 10,000 supporting companies, and state that about 60% of the world's small appliances are made there; Cixi's 2024 exports of household appliances were reported at RMB 29.66 billion. Corded upright and canister vacuums and mid-range contract production are concentrated in Zhejiang.
For a buyer, Cixi suits corded household machines, accessories and handhelds where cost control across large volumes matters and the part chain is mature.
Shunde, Foshan: depth of the appliance supply chain
Shunde in Guangdong is covered in regional reports as a home appliance hub with over 3,000 appliance manufacturers and suppliers. A WorldFirst industry report states that about 80% of parts can be sourced within a 50 km radius, and that 2025 appliance output in the area passed RMB 400 billion with exports of RMB 57.75 billion. The cluster is broader than vacuums, which is its strength: motors, plastics, wiring, controllers and packaging are all nearby, and plants are used to multiple categories.
For a buyer, Shunde is useful when a product combines vacuum parts with other appliance parts, or when a specialised supplier needs to be found quickly.
Shenzhen and Guangzhou: robot ODM and commercial machines
The Pearl River Delta around Shenzhen and Guangzhou concentrates electronics-led robot vacuum ODM work, with navigation sensors, wireless modules, controller boards and firmware close at hand, and also commercial cleaning machinery such as wet dry vacuums, floor scrubbers and industrial vacuums. For a buyer who wants app control, mapping or a custom docking station, this region is often where the engineering conversation starts.
The export picture behind the clusters
IndexBox, drawing on customs data, reports that China shipped about 184 million vacuum cleaners worth roughly USD 65 billion in 2024 under HS 8508, the United States being the largest destination with around 19% of volume, followed by Germany and Japan. Customs figures reported in the press for January to September 2024 show 136.71 million units, up 16.66% year on year. A volume like this can only be built on a dense supplier base, which is what the clusters above provide. It also means that ordinary quantities for a brand or an importer, measured in hundreds or thousands of units per model, are small orders for a cluster plant, and the buyer's leverage comes from a clear specification and a reliable schedule rather than from size.
How to use cluster knowledge in practice
- Pick the line first, then the cluster, rather than starting with a plant that happens to answer fastest.
- Ask each shortlisted plant which of its parts are made in-house and which come from neighbouring suppliers; this shows how exposed the schedule is to a single part.
- Compare two plants from different clusters on the same brief when the line allows it, for example a mid-range cordless stick from Suzhou against one from Guangdong.
- Plan visits or remote audits by cluster, so one trip covers several candidate plants and their key suppliers.
Matching a line to a cluster
| Cluster | Typical strengths | Lines to consider first |
|---|---|---|
| Suzhou (Jiangsu) | Floor care, motors, precision components | Robot, cordless stick, pet hair |
| Cixi (Zhejiang) | Corded household, small appliances, cost control | Upright, canister, handheld |
| Shunde (Guangdong) | Broad appliance supply chain | Mixed projects, accessories, components |
| Shenzhen / Guangzhou | Electronics, robot ODM, commercial machines | Robot ODM, wet dry, commercial, industrial |
The table is a starting point, not a rule: plants in each region cross over, and the right partner depends on tooling capacity, the standards experience of the plant and what the order requires. The household and commercial and industrial categories show which lines each region typically serves.
What clusters do not tell you
A cluster address is not a quality credential. Within any cluster there are strong plants and weak ones, and reports on cluster scale say nothing about a specific supplier's documents, test equipment or social compliance. That is what a factory audit is for, and the audit checklist lists the points to verify. Sourcing from the right cluster raises the odds of finding a good plant; it does not replace checking one.
How a shortlist is built, sampled and moved toward a first order is described in sourcing vacuum cleaners from China. To have the desk propose clusters and partner plants for a specific line, use the quote form.
